This tool is extremely helpful if you know how to use it, but honestly, most people don’t… For those of you who have never used this tool before, you’re going to be impressed how easy it is to use.
I’m going to break it down into steps… follow them!!!
How to use the best free keyword research tool on the planet…
Step 1 – pick your topic
Picking a topic is easy, pick a topic you feel like writing about, anything is possible. The key here is providing valuable content to your readers.
Step 2 – brainstorm at least 10 potential keywords or long tail keywords
Think about what people may search for related to your topic. You could go to Google and start typing potential keywords or phrases in the search bar and look at the suggested words that Google automatically populates. This might help you with your brainstorm.
Step 3 – Type your words in the box of the Google keyword tool
Make sure you type one keyword per line.
Step 4 – Check 2 boxes then click search
Make sure you check the box that says “Only show ideas closely related to my search terms” that is just above the “search” button and also check the box that says [exact] in the type of match category found on the left side of the page. Make sure no other match types are selected.
Step 5 – Sort the results by clicking on “Global Monthly Searches”
This will sort the results by amount of searches worldwide. If you prefer to search the results based on “Local Monthly Searches” you can do this too (Local is within your country).
Step 6 – Pick your keyword
This is the fun part. You can pick the keyword or keyword phrase you want to write about. IMPORTANT!!! Always pick a keyword that has a monthly search count of 300 or more. The higher the better. I do not recommend going less than 300, its not worth your time.
Step 7 – Check your keywords competition
After you pick 3 to 5 potential keywords that you like its time to check how competitive it is to rank for them. Simply go to Google.com and search for your keyword in quotations. ex: “YOUR KEYWORD”
After you click the search button you will see some small gray text just below the search box that tells you how many results there are. These are the amount of website pages that are trying to rank for your keyword.
Obviously, the less competition the better… I like to use the 300,000 mark as a line in the sand. Anything above 300,000 I deem as too competitive. It’s just not worth my time to try and compete with that many other websites.
Step 8 – After you found a keyword that has at least 300 monthly searches and less than 300,000 competitors its time to start writing your content!
So there you have it. The best keyword research tool is actually free! And after learning these 8 simple steps you can now go do keyword research with confidence that it will work!
